TRUST AND OBEY

John H. Sammis, 1836 - 1919

Dwight L. Moody preached a lesson - upon reaching the invitation a young man arose and said:

"I am not quite sure -- but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey".

"I just jotted the sentence down, and sent it with the little story to the Rev. J. H. Sammis, a Presbyterian minister. He wrote the hymn, and the tune was born.

Interesting, the original 4th stanza is not included --

But we never can prove, the delights of His love

Until all on the altar we lay

For the favor he shows, and the joy He bestows

Are for them who will trust and obey.

Some odd 'misconceptions'  --

1.    'trust' & "obey' = words of the 'will' -- involve our knowing / choosing / doing -- not really a good 'Calvinistic' concept!

2.    Reaction of D. L. Moody - typical,

The blood ALONE makes us safe --

The Word ALONE makes us sure --

But obedience ALONE makes us happy --

NOT ALONE!  The problem is that of isolating things…

1 Samuel 15:22

22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Hebrews 5:8-9

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,  8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:  9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Romans 6:17-18

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.  18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Mark 16:15-16,
